Considering he made it on the Mercury Prize longlist for his beguiling 2011 debut and two AIM Music Award nominations for its follow-up, Ghostpoet bravely sought reinvention on 2015’s Shedding Skin. Building a reputation for trip hop-tinged spoken word, Ghostpoet’s Obaro Ejimiwe reemerged as an indie rock troubadour on Shedding Skin while retaining his melodically poetic observations. Highlight “Be Right Back, Moving House'' could slide in alongside any of The National’s finest melancholic displays while its title track intimately unpacks homelessness amongst the album’s heavier universal themes. Considering Shedding Skin netted Ejimiwe a second Mercury nomination, fearless reinventing seems to suit Ghostpoet well.
