PLZ Make It Ruins round off a huge 2021 with an inspired link up of two visionary artists. Soon after dropping out of school to dive headlong into London’s sprawling music scene, Flynn quickly found himself writing and collaborating with the likes of David Byrne, FKA Twigs, and Slowthai, the latter of which proclaimed the singer/songwriter/beatmaker as a “legend in the making” with the potential to be “as great as Bowie.” Vegyn similarly saw his name rise on the strength of boundless collaborating and tinkering. Even before his debut album, 2019’s Only Diamonds Cut Diamonds, cemented his singularly woozy stamp on glitch hop, the London-based producer, DJ, and graphic designer had already built working friendships with Frank Ocean, JPEGMAFIA, and Aminé.

At its chilled core, ‘Superstition’ takes a spectral folk and electronica influenced song and animates it with Vegyn’s glitchy, blown-out flourishes, but the focus is on Flynn as he laments a souring relationship and feelings of existential uncertainty while waiting on an appointment. Before they can find some daylight amidst it all, ‘Superstition’ unspools as quickly as it arrives in a swirl of noise. Obviously not the most heartwarming of conclusions, but ‘Superstition’ is nevertheless a subdued gift from two rising talents that favor heartfelt experimenting over wrapping their songwriting (and emotions) up in tidy bows.

Flynn and Vegyn coming together feels natural as two multi-hyphenate creators with a mutual sense of genre agnosticism, but ‘Superstition’ is far from a self-congratulatory moment as the duo explores the snags and heartaches of everyday life.
