Among Gerald Donald’s many production aliases, Arpanet may be his most mercurial. The Drexciya and Dopplereffekt man’s contributions to the Detroit techno sound need no introduction, but Arpanet skews a little different. Pedigree alone ensured that the Hydrostatic Equilibrium EP (his first release under the name since 2006) sold out almost immediately during its initial 2018 run, but these two tracks promise a different sound than the usual machine funk. Opener ‘Supernova Remnant’ in particular speaks truth to the supposed scientific connection in its beatless sway, sounding kind of like the controls on a spaceship booting up.
