Much like the dizzying drawings of vocalist Nick Blinko that adorn its cover, Rudimentary Peni’s punk opus Death Church is packed with vitriolic thoughts. After a pair of 7”s introducing the world to their uncompromising anarcho-punk, the band’s 1983 debut full-length gave Blinko space to take aim at former idols, systems of power, and generally all of humanity with his gothically macabre lyricism. Coupled with Grant Matthews’ thick, post punk-indebted basslines and the frantic drumming of Jon Greville, Rudimentary Peni cemented an artful brand of punk on Death Church that proved hard to describe and even harder to imitate.
