Covert ID is a true labour of love; years in the making, the debut proper from X or Size is a kaleidoscopic vision beyond the confines of electronica. Not unlike the work of Actress, Huerco S. and Andy Stott, there’s a textural quality across this disc, as if created from the loose debris of a future civilisation without the aid of fancy electronic trinkets. ‘Urn State’ morphs out of vamping chimes and a muted bass step, sounding like house music imagined after an apocalypse. Meanwhile, the record’s brilliant title track has tendrils of nu-new age about its endless, glowing aura.
