Originally released in 1999, Come On Die Young set the benchmark for Mogwai’s later output and is revered for its poignant offerings of sullen, restrained instrumentals that lend themselves to a meditative mood. The group’s interesting use of samples encourages a deeper sense of listening, for instance, the interestingly titled ‘Punk Rock’ with Iggy Pop’s television interview and the background American sports on ‘Helps Both Ways’ adding to the isolated atmosphere. To top it off, Chemikal Underground does the landmark release its justice with a deluxe vinyl reissue package containing a double LP of demos, unreleased takes and rarities.
