You might call this 'industrial music’, but it isn’t the kind that bursts eardrums and crafts imposing rhythms out of sheet metal. The music of industry is more deeply rooted in library music, of the kind heard in instructional videotapes, played out in sounds from ancient, kitsch-sci-fi synthesised melodies and an eerie feeling of alienation -- and sometimes nostalgic comfort. This is what Warrington-Runcorn New Town Development’s People & Industry sounds like; an on-boarding seminar for a distant time and place, when specks on the map of England had enormous cooling towers on their horizons.
