Sound artist Simon James explores the electronic markets that surround the Chinese city of Shenzhen in this stunning collection of treated electromagnetic field recordings. Presented in a unique mixed-media release including a hand bound booklet with a Ballardian short science fiction story by UAL Professor of Sound and Landscape Angus Carlyle inspired by the Shenzhen recordings as well as the album presented on an upcycled USB stick gathered from various sources in an effort to protect the environment.

“As an artist, I use my work to get lost in other worlds,” explains Simon James. “It’s what I’ve always done – creating worlds that are fantastical and strange. So when I come up against these kinds of sounds, I feel that they create a world that I want to inhabit, a world I want to escape to, a strange combination of the exciting and the familiar.”

A further development of his 2018 release ‘‘Musicity 003 – Shenzhen / Shanghai – China’ Simon focuses on the enveloping hum and whirring tones recorded by his electromagnetic microphone. Similar to Gerald Donald’s Japanese Telecom EP from ’99 the release is a study of our growing dependence on technology. Adding minimal reverb, EQ, and filters these recordings offer a unique entrance to co-existing audio realm similar to Jóhann Jóhannsson’s decaying, dystopian soundtrack to Last And First Men - however despite the minimal treatment added sounding yet more alien. Fans of Mika Vainio’s most formidable work will revel in the droning low end frequencies of Hydro X and Happy Day.

Electro Smog is a thrilling listen that demands undivided attention, capturing the omnipresent but intangible energy of 21st-century technology and posing prescient questions about the importance it now holds.
