2017’s Love What Survives marked the zenith of the duo’s creative project, a record driven by motorik forces and ‘fourth world’ reveries, complemented by its menagerie of star turns from King Krule, Micachu and James Blake. To celebrate the record’s fourth anniversary, Dom and Kai share a couple of unreleased tracks from the sessions.

Drop the needle on the exquisite, lilting psychedelia of ‘Black Stone’ and you’ll wonder why it was ever left off the record for not quite gelling with the rest of the material. The track hits at an ethereal level between 1980s Ryuichi Sakamoto and Neu!, until the sonic textures rip apart into a wormhole of spiralling noise. On the other hand, ‘Blue Liquid’ — with its drum machine pit-pat and woozy lead melody — feels like a lost track from the duo’s halcyon days, cut from the same UK bass cloth they were busily turning inside out at the time.

The two tracks are a reminder that, while Mount Kimbie’s sound has long been imprinted on electronic pop music, their more experimental inclinations are just as fascinating.
