A patriarchal society begets a patriarchal history; you’ve likely never heard of Janet Beat. One of many pioneering women in 1960s electronic music, Beat hasn’t been widely heard in recordings as her work has simply never been issued, and many of her early recordings were destroyed by her father. The aptly-titled Pioneering Knob Twiddler contains inspired alien sonic landscapes akin to Laurie Spiegel and Delia Derbyshire, with more than a hint of folk sensibility about them.
