Originally released in 1975 during his ill-fated and short-lived partnership with ABC/Impulse!, even the titan label of jazz recording couldn’t contain the vastness of Sun Ra’s Pathways to Unknown Worlds. A man we’ve come to see as utopian, Ra comes off a shade more pessimistic and angry on this record, with each horn squall and rousing crescendo resounding as a primal cry into the abyss.
