Sacred, militaristic and certainly ancient; for time immemorial, percussion has had many functions and purposes in Japanese folk traditions. Producers and musicians Osuwa Daiko and Masahiko Sato have imbued Suwa Ikazuchi with much of that storied history, repurposing bellowing drums and blaring horns into a work of uncanny majesty. The record effectively takes the shape of a longform piece, flitting from menacing war marches to more jazz inflicted work.
