This here’s a fascinating jazz album with an even more fascinating back-story. In May 1972, a crew of jazz multi-instrumentalists left their home in Madagascar for Paris, seeking a new world promised by the left-wing student riots of 1968. There, the troupe met with an old acquaintance, Jef Gilson, whom they’d met four years prior during a series of concerts and workshops in Tananarive. At Newport-Paris is a document of their fruitful collaboration, which saw the perfect synchronicity of classy, melodious big band jazz, fiery drum and hand percussion sections and freeform guitar noodling.
