Duane Pitre curates the second volume of Important Records’ The Harmonic Series, dedicating a mammoth three LPs to some of contemporary composition’s most rigorous and challenging creators of long-form sound. A thoroughfare of this collection is the limitless possibilities lying beyond harmony; travels through disharmony and back again. The breadth of ideas here is astounding; Tashi Wada’s side is dedicated to pure dissonance, a static microtonal dirge which inexplicably seems to descend across its runtime, while Pitre and Kali Malone’s respective pieces channel a spiritual cadence with organ drones and a sense of vastness. Conversely, the breadth of Catherine Lamb’s ‘Intersum’ crafts an enormous world utilising lower case murmurations.
