Best known for his work in shoegaze band Ride, Andy Bell has utilised his GLOK alias to explore 'the push and pull between electronic and psych’ over the past few years. On ‘Pattern Recognition’, his debut full-length released via Ransom Note Records’ sister label Bytes, he does just that, weaving house, techno, Kosmische and shoegaze together with a clear view to the psychically transformative. On opener ‘Dirty Hugs’ propulsive techno grooves gives way to a soaring stadium electric guitar solo over distorted synths: it’s a gamble of contrasting spaces, but Bell pulls it off. Next ‘Closer’ takes on Larry Heard, giving an insight into the record’s many electronic influences, before the first of many fruitful collaborations which punctuate the record through poetic spoken word and vocals by Shamon Cassette, Sinead O’Brien and C.A.R. An ambitious body of work connecting the dots between multiple genre categories.
