You would think that a group who have been around for such a long time would have no business being so funky, but legendary Manchester troupe A Certain Ratio show that fine grooves can come with age. ACR:EPC is the second of a trilogy of EPs dedicated to mining the group’s unbeatable propensity for crafting irresistible body-movers, and this time features some help from Emperor Machine, Jacknife Lee, Maria Uzor and Chris Massey, each of which contributes an invaluable amount of synthesised vibrancy to proceedings. ‘The Guv’nor’ in particular resonates as a kind-of-collaboration with ACR’s late friend Andrew Weatherall, as the infectious density of the rest of the EP is cleared for a percussive, slow-building techno pace.
