A 22a flagship artist by now, jazz agnostics Ruby Rushton return with a tasty teaser of their upcoming work. If you’re already hip to Rushton’s jazz forays, you’re already primed for what the group’s putting down with Gideon’s Way. There’s no question about the constant touch of class you’re likely to get from any of their releases, but this EP’s title track goes the extra mile to capture that Isaac Hayes funk, a cop-show noir sensibility switched out for crystalline beauty with ‘The Good Mixer’ — that is, until the pace is picked up once again by a propulsive jazz organ.
