Rey Sapienz is a Congolese producer and vocalist, based in Uganda and a co-founder of the hugely influential Hakuna Kalula label based in the capital. Na Zala Zala sees him pair with percussionist, vocalist and dancer Papalas Palata and rapper Fresh Doggis in The Congo Techno Ensemble. For fans of Nyege Nyege, it’s a thrillingly spirited collection of some of the exciting outsider electronic music which is in full flow across East Africa. Off-the-grid drums combine traditional syncopation with thudding electronic experimentation, with darkly trippy vocals twisted into it. Across myriad tempos, Na Zala Zala defies norms at every turn.
