Back in February 2010 legendary musician poet and author Gil Scott-Heron made a return after a 13 years hiatus. Without doubt one of the most important voices in late 20th century music a poet, black activist, musician, singer, writer, Scott-Heron sounds as relevant today as the day his first record broke way back in 1970. Slotting into the primitive sonic backdrop of XL label boss Richard Russell's production; all splintered drum machines, hissing hammond organs, folk guitar, gospel backing vocals and pulsing electronic rhythms . This is the heartbreaking sound of a man weathered with experience, of troubled times and of redemption. Here we see him take on classics and contemporary material from the likes of Bobby Blue Bland, Robert Johnson, Bill Callahan etc. Beautiful stuff.
