Brighton bookseller Bill Butler was facing a hefty fine after a guilty verdict in a 1968 obscenity trial. A fellow ‘corruptor of minds’, Burroughs helped him out with the charges by gifting him the rights to ‘Ali’s Smile’. The original pressing of William Burroughs’ curious and characteristically depraved tale was first published in 1971 and privately released as a plain-sleeved, one-sided LP in an ultra-limited run of only 99. Had an unknown number of copies not become warped by being left on a heater, Butler might’ve escaped his legal troubles. Paradigm Discs offers the first reissue of the piece, accompanied by a 33-minute Q&A from Burroughs on the flip-side.
