When Equiknoxx crew members Gavsborg and Time Cow occupied a cosy Kingston apartment at the behest of Birmingham-based MC RTKal, ‘Elephant Man’ was the result of long, nostalgic meditations on founding figures in dancehall culture. As is characteristic of all Equiknoxx releases, the outrageous bombast of dancehall is flipped into a bizarro world version — in this case, there’s a quietly meditative and joyously elegiac quality to the track’s lo-fi bitrate percussion, adorned with chilly synth phrases and in-the-room audio details, as the snapshot verses depicting a boss man riding around Kingston, Jamaica on a scooter van set a vivid scene.
