John Grant is best known as an idiosyncratic autobiographical storyteller, an intriguing figure as candid about his personal life as he is paradoxically hard to pin down. Even from its title, Boy from Michigan already seems like his most autobiographical LP yet, but the opening title track feels miraculously elusive; a longform pop song featuring one of Grant’s greatest choruses played out over progressive disco sci-fi synths. Meanwhile, the skittish rhythm of ‘Rhetorical Figure’ pays homage to Grant’s love for Devo, a true blue testimony to Grant’s strange and constantly evolving approach as a singer-songwriter (deftly matched by likeminded weirdo, album producer Cate Le Bon).
