A firm favourite of jazz outsiders and establishment figures alike, it’s easy to see how the overwhelming draw of trumpeter, composer and arranger Matthew Halsall’s When The World Was One is instantaneous. The title track opens with the classy splash of cymbals and harps from his Gondwana Orchestra, as a saxophone plays a snake-charming lead over the wash of sound. There’s a deliberate invocation of the Coltranes going on here, and Halsall finds a way of modernising their modal hypnotism into light-as-air jazz with the deep, heavy psychedelia kept fully intact.
