Anyone hip to the perfectly synchronous craft of Mammal Hands’ 2014 debut Animalia knows the score with its follow-up. In keeping with the theme of elemental forces, Floa — an old Norse word for deluge or flow — sees the trio effortlessly meld the finer points of jazz, folk, electronica and minimalist composition into a form of music that only bears a passing resemblance to any of these genres. The steely reeds, emulsifying piano and splashing drums of ‘In The Treetops’ and ‘Kudu’ meditate on circular patterns and subtly shifting layers of sound, unlocking their potential for limitlessness and altering the passage of time in a pinch.
