Originally released in 2001, Electronic Ambient Remixes Three houses yet another round of Chris Carter’s vast instrumental cuts, lifted from a seemingly endless archive, each track a reminder of the producer’s centrality to ambient and left-field techno movements. Largely created by manipulating rhythm tapes originally used by Carter alongside his old band — Throbbing Gristle — throughout the 1970s and 80s, these dark, woozy compositions have rarely been heard outside of gallery installations, music festivals and TV and radio. Experimental in nature and compelling as documents of Carter’s ever-expanding body of work, the most striking facet of Electronic Ambient Remixes Three is the producer’s ability to approach his own work self-reflexively.
