Originally conceived as a film soundtrack and still bearing tell-tale signs of an instrumental mode, Bliss Land is a fitting title for Hattie Cooke’s third album. A further cry from the horror-twinged dark wave of 2019’s The Sleepers, there’s a kind of joyous immediacy to the way she crafts these melodies, unfurled on software synths and drum machines with the exploratory approach of a refreshed mind. The likes of ‘Mistaken’ and ‘Cars’ linger on beautifully simple rhythms — the first a squelching synth number, the second a sleuthing indie pop mood — as Cooke’s vocal meditates on her past and present.
