Gathered from a set of cassette recordings made in Athens — although they sound like the kind of bizarre relics you’d dig up at an archaeological site millennia after a mysterious apocalyptic event — avant-garde percussionist Christos Chondropoulos’ Athenian Primitivism purposefully obscures past and future. Part fictitious musicological study, part primal fascination in the vein of The Pop Group, Chondropoulos fashions some compelling ‘dance’ music using traditional Greek instrumentation, imagining a folkloric parallel realm of cybernetic beings co-inhabiting with post-human life. The sleeve’s topographical art style is a give away; Athenian Primitivism is an exquisitely detailed slice of sci-fi world-building.
