Dave Sumner dons his Function alias with a return to that legendary Berlin club, label and institution Tresor entitled Awakening From The Illusory Self - his first for them since his LP Existenz in late 2019. Kicking off with a rhythm-first, body music workout on ‘Misinterpretations of Reality’, he moves into deeper, stepping terrain on ‘An Optical Illusion of Consciousness’, conjuring soundscapes of the 90s Dutch techno pioneers. ‘Spiritually Unconscious (Dissolve)’ leans into electro territory, built around a tunnelling synth lead, before closing out with ‘Compulsive Thinking: Repetitive and Pointless’ - a sparse, dystopian techno roller constructed on a monolithic scale.
