In a series of reissues celebrating UK imprint Leaf’s 20th Anniversary, Japanese experimental duo Asa Chang & Jun Ray see their 02’ Leaf debut LP Jun Ray Song Chang reissued. It’s a highly eccentric, individualized piece that draws influence and texture from a worldly array of sources, rearranged in a manner that at times recalls a deranged, theatrical Noh exhibition. Throughout, Indian influences are intertwined with oddball, heavily processed Japanese vocals, such as the quirky ‘Kobana’ or the dramatic tribal drumming of ‘Goo-Gung-Gung’. On ‘Tabla Bol (Catastrophe)’ percussionist Asa Chang exhibits her dexterous tabla skills whilst closer ‘Kutsu’ finishes of with a friendly string of woodwind notes.
