In the pantheon of strange Godspeed You! Black Emperor album titles, this one is a clear winner. What’s more, G_d’s Pee AT STATE’S END finds the anarcho-punk post-rock heretics on excellent form; back in the deeply affecting, elegiac multi-suite monolith mode of their early works, with the customary obscurantism — slow-building guitars, droning strings, otherworldly field recordings — raised to a fever pitch. The four gargantuan pieces pay special attention to heavy metal-adjacent chugs, grounding Godspeed in some of their weightiest modes to date while allowing transcendental beauty to flourish. Though words are rarely spoken in the works of Godspeed, they still make the most profound protest music.
