Thomas Cohen’s latest project Sylph brings together a host of illustrious Mute artists for a series of bone-crushing industrial techno EPs. The method here is to approach hard-hitting electronics as a singer-songwriter, and so just as you start to believe the electrostatic drones and thumping low-end of ‘Braid’ (featuring Terence Fixmer) are about to grow terse with ever-sparking textures, Cohen’s ringing vocal tone breaks through like an alien disco diva. ‘In The Morning Light’ sees Nicolas Bougaïeff upping the rave dial, as Rrose pits Cohen’s lyrical vulnerability against a mass of teeming noise, flowing from liquid to solid throughout its glorious 7-minute run-time.
