As any composer of substance knows, there’s immense drama in the correct implementation of silence. While the second instalment of contemporary classical master-of-the-form Max Richter’s Voices project is as moving and gargantuan as its 2020 predecessor, there’s a densely poetic aspect to its key difference. Where the first Voices saw Richter put out an open call for voice snippets of people reading from The Universal Declaration Of Human Rights, Voices 2 expands the original’s musical language into stirring instrumental realms of abstraction. The LP is yet another release from a composer acutely aware of how to make impactful political statements without being didactic.
