Having won the adoration of establishment and outsider jazz figures alike, trumpeter, composer and arranger Matthew Halsall doubles down on the eternal with Into Forever. Alice Coltrane’s cadences can be felt across this release, with thanks in large part to the sweeping harps and strings of The Gondwana Orchestra, informed by film score drama and an ability to cradle melodies so delicate they almost vanish into fine vapour on contact with air. Coltrane’s presence is felt especially keenly on the number of tracks fronted by vocalist Josephine Oniyama, each a wistful and meditative melding of spiritual jazz and fusion sensibilities.
