As far back as our recollection goes, we can’t think of many albums made by unborn entities — if any at all. Luca Yupanqui was still in the womb when Sounds of the Unborn was recorded, facilitated by her parents-in-waiting Elizabeth Hart (Psychic Ills bassist) and Iván Diaz Mathé (Lee “Scratch” Perry collaborator) via bionic MIDI technology. The LP tracks in utero movements and transforms them into subterranean sound designs, akin to a bizarre, off-kilter type of EBM. The album offers a fascinating, eerie and often sublime blending of incidental music, techno and noise, each strain shattered to the point of indecipherability — and yet all too (pre)human.
