Since debuting in 2019 on the ever-reliable psych imprint Rocket Recordings, DJINN have evidently discovered a melodic core to their bilious cosmic jazz experiments. Even while maintaining the off-the-wall spiritualism of DJINN, the project — a collective effort featuring members of Hills and GOAT — inject a swinging sensibility into Transmission, resulting in an LP which almost sounds like the cocktail-party counterpart to its predecessor. The horn swagger of ‘Creation of Creation’ is as ferociously catchy as Sun Ra’s most upbeat measures, while the flute meandering of ‘Nights with Kurupi’ strikes a neat balance between dignified sophistication and ecstatic chaos.
