It would seem off-brand at first glance for Phantom Limb to release an alternative hip-hop LP — but Tariq Ravelomanana aka Infinity Knives’ Dear, Sudan puts a greater emphasis on the ‘alternative’ part of the formula. Trap energy surges through ‘Brian’s #1’ and ‘Black Addicts’, but Dear, Sudan defies genre in the most spectacular way with an avant-gardist’s penchant for experimentation. A tortured neo-soul spirit haunts ‘TYLER MOONLIGHT’, and anyone would be forgiven for wondering whether or not string-led ambient numbers like ‘Thus Spoke My Father, The Coward’ and ‘Dis Dumbass Ghost’ were some mis-categorised Nils Frahm pieces.
