Indie rock legends Tindersticks quickly return from the Scott Walker-esque expansiveness of 2020's No Treasure But Hope. The Nottingham quartet dodges easy summation just as they’ve done for the entirety of their career, although there’s plenty of film score flourishes in keeping with lead singer Stuart Staples’ recent solo work. The opening epic ‘Man Alone (Can’t Stop the Fadin’)’ treads out a simple drum machine pattern for its 11-minute run time, rife with the tension and poise of a particularly low-key 12”minimal disco track, as they later reimagine Neil Young’s ‘A Man Needs a Maid’ as an ice-cold tundra, both sweet and haunting.
