Visionary post-punk legend (with just as much staying power within industrial and electronic music) Richard H. Kirk returns after a 26-year absence to a world he helped create. Shadow of Funk — not to be confused with the 2020 comeback LP Shadow of Fear — could easily be a descriptor of the kind of music on this disc, and indeed, Cabaret Voltaire’s output as a whole; pitch black and yet strangely groovy, the dark underside of rhythm. The title track and ‘Skinwalker’ are both furious epics of depraved techno viscousness, replete with grizzly beats and the Cabs’ trademark arsenal of samples. Meanwhile ‘Billion Dollar’ is a nightmare rave cut, a true testament to Kirk’s enduring influence.
