Landing on vinyl for the first time with extra material, A 480 is the criminally overlooked 2014 debut by Canadian composer Kara-Lis Coverdale. This is a vocal album, but only in theory; Coverdale loops voice tones through an audio program in much the same way Laurie Spiegel lets electronic synthesis do its thing, offering a vast, angelic chorus of cosmic proportions, constantly transforming melodies in tune with a higher, unseen presence. ‘A 479’, which sits prettily at 23 minutes, provides a particularly heavy and slow-acting dose of psychedelia, as morphing waves reveal unique and entrancing sonic shapes.
