A leading light among the new school of UK electronic producers, Yorkshireman Rian Treanor follows up the jerky thrill of File Under UK Metaplasm with more frenetic transformations of global dance music traditions. Across the four tracks of Obstacle Scattering, Treanor carves out a unique, Rephlex-shaped ingenuity by finding hidden rhythms in acid, DnB and techno — all with a certain juke flourish. ‘Obstacle’ 1 and 2 get off to a hyperactive hardcore start, as the latter descends into a metallic screech of noise; just when the flip side would appear to be a little more relaxed, the glassy tones of ‘Obstacle 3’ quickly morph into another hi-octane descent into a spike pit.
