It’s rare that a remix album is regarded as an essential entry in an artist’s canon alongside their original studio work, but if there’s any one artist known for sidestepping convention, it’s SOPHIE. OIL OF EVERY PEARL’S UN-INSIDES was already a scene-shifting, culture-upheaving masterpiece (and one of our top 10 albums in 2018), and SOPHIE expertly followed up a year later with the mammoth NON-STOP REMIX ALBUM, consisting almost entirely of solo productions that completely reconfigure the original tracks. It’s effectively a whole new work, containing some of SOPHIE’s most electrifyingly brutal, dreamily pretty music.

Experienced as a seamless club mix, NON-STOP REMIX ALBUM is arguably SOPHIE’s most intricate and interwoven record, jumping from strutting ballroom house and early rave references to metallic abstraction and submarine ambience, as familiar sounds are made unrecognisable with ballooning bass, whirring glitches, and lightning striking the dancefloor. It's a cornucopia of hyperphysical sound design right from the beginning: the moody, speaker shattering bass of ‘Cold World’ ushers in gusts of frost laced vocals and thin punctuating slivers of kicks, moving to the event horizon of acid on ‘XTC Acid’ with the most turgid synthesis you've ever heard.

The original tracks’ hyperpop scintillations are retained on remixes like ‘Whole New World’ with Doss, lifting into vapourific trickles and dropping into brain scrubbing water jets, while ‘Infatuation (Lichtbogen Dreamin’ Remix)’ is one of SOPHIE's most euphoric, movement inducing, beaming grins of a song, reaching a zenith with ebullient piano chords. Elsewhere, those sugary traces are melted into quicksilver, drenched in metallic reverb, and severed into abstraction. The angelic and luxurious feature from Bibi Bourelly on ‘Faceshopping (Money Mix)’ contrasts against devastating industrial carnage, leading to lumbering atmospherics of crystalline laser harp made with Benny Long before plunging into monolithic depths with the closing suite of ‘Infatuation’ remixes.

Originally produced in limited edition triple transparent red vinyl, the record shows SOPHIE in party mode as she brings her iconic and critically acclaimed record to the club for 95 minutes of non-stop dance remixes featuring some of her long-term collaborators and friends (Doss, Cecile Believe, Bibi Bourelly, BC Kingdom).
