House Music is fairly misleading as a title, but something of the genre’s DIY and rearrangement ethos remains in the music of Bell Orchestre. The expansive Montreal-based group determined the bare bones of the 10-song suite in heady jam sessions and later carved out a structure at the editing stage, but the off-the-wall improvisatory nature of these classical-meets-meets-jazz-meets-krautrock slices of psychedelia remains whole-heartedly organic in tone, flitting from clattering grooves on ‘III: Dark Steel’ to near-deep techno levels of ambience on ‘VIII: Making Time’.
