There’s an optical illusion quality to the music of London-based Northern duo FYI Chris, not unlike their debut LP Earth Scum’s cover; a computer key which somehow looks like an empty room. On the one hand, the likes of ‘Pizza Dust’ and ‘Tempora’ give off the scrappy glow of early house, ignited by string samples and icy pads, as ‘Outie’ channels a unique kind of acid energy and the slithering groove of ‘The Vault’ invokes a particularly laid-back beat tape approach. Like a magic painting, Earth Scum is never quite one thing, and yet, a wry humour and post-punk-ish attitude makes it seem like a life-like portrait.
