A striking example of the project’s many soundtrack extracurriculars, Coil’s score to Sara Dale’s Sensual Massage — an erotic film, true to the group’s subversive nature and penchant for countercultural media — finally arrives in its full-frontal form. Much in the vein of Coil’s dark ambient score to the Gay Man’s Guide To Safer Sex instructional tape, this LP finds John Balance and Peter “Sleazy” Christopherson’s subtle new age sensibilities drip-fed into oddly chilling ambient soundscapes. There’s nary a beat in sight across the release, pre-empting the unique brand of amorphous, crepuscular mastery of Musick to Play in the Dark Vol. 1.
