Ilian Tape lift an absolute golden age techno masterwork from the archives of legendary Primate Recordings off-shoot Primevil. By our estimation, 1999’s Rhino marks the end of Paul Souter’s Herman Funker III phase, and it’s a remarkable feat that such classic rave numbers sound so fresh over two decades later. ‘Box’s’ and ‘Collection Of Stuff’ are characterised by that faithful skull-shaking 808 cymbal and pad, while the centrepiece ‘Rhino’ is propelled by a snare-bongo melee and a host of tiny details for the keen listener. Perhaps ‘Rhino Remake’ will help illuminate for the rest of us.
