In its original form, Nimbus Sextet’s ‘Lily White’ is a gorgeous ballad which sits at the nexus of neo-soul and the contemporary jazz style in the current UK scene. However, the overhaul that the track receives here from veteran producer/composer Matthew Herbert takes the Glaswegian outfit’s idea in a decidedly different direction. Whereas the original ‘Lily White’ was a luxurious half-time strut, Herbert plumbs the track with a vibrant, propulsive drive derived from the rhythmic minimalism of Steve Reich.

Herbert’s ‘Singing Dub’ version of ‘Lily White’ gets the bit between its teeth from the off. Nimbus Sextet’s track is broken down into a series of short loops, from snippets of singing to a skipping drum break and an exuberant brass fanfare. These cells of sound phase in and out of sync with one another as ‘Singing Dub’ goes on, the effect of which is at once psychedelic yet also ensures that the track retains real rhythmic drive throughout its eight-minute run-time. The results are colourful and hugely dynamic, celebrating the rich harmonies and compositional energy of Nimbus Sextet’s original composition by honing in on some of its most intimate details.

This limited white-label 12” features a buoyant ‘Singing Dub’ remix of Glaswegian contemporary jazz outfit Nimbus Sextet by the restless creative spirit that is Matthew Herbert.
