Kara-Lis Coverdale launches her label, Gate, with the first vinyl edition of her highly-acclaimed and sought-after, 2015 album Aftertouches. Originally released as a 100-copy cassette, Aftertouches brilliantly captured the Canadian composer’s early adventures in modern classical. She repurposed her years playing the organ into the space between formal, medieval music and modern soundscapes, orchestrating virtual choirs into a dreamstate like no other. The push-and-pull between age-old and innovative technology is a defining balance on the album, revealing itself in fascinating and achingly beautiful ways. So is the balance between discipline and experimentation, which Coverdale treads finely, paying due respect to both notions and, in doing so, creating a masterpiece.
