After spending years soundtracking some of the 21st century’s best loved films like Jackie and Under the Skin, pop’s most mercurial mind Mica Levi surprise-releases their first solo album under their own name. Not content with simply imitating past successes, Levi wanders beyond the sunny psychedelia of their Good Sad Happy Bad side project and deeper into mauled, lo-fi obscurantism with Ruff Dog, a record which feels as personal as it is totally inscrutable. Pop structures lie under the murky synth and guitar hiss of ‘Chains Baggy’ and ‘Kind of Strange’, but Levi remains as tantalisingly elusive as ever.
