Forebears of post-rock’s boundless potential The Durutti Column have certainly sounded less typically ‘rock’ since 1986’s Circuses and Bread (see 1990’s house-indebted Obey the Time), but rarely have they appeared to be so dedicated to subtly shifting the goalposts of their craft. ‘Pauline’ begins with the great romantic swoon of a viola coming off as the opening section of a film score, while amid the structured songs like ‘Tomorrow’ comes the majestic horn ascension of ‘For Hilary’.
