Who else can wrangle a coherent set of quietly psychedelic tunes out of motorik repetition, industrial noise and transcendently simple melodies better than the best of the best? The brainchild of Krautrock luminaries Klaus Dinger and Michael Rother, aided by the production of “hidden member” Conny Plank, 1972's Neu! marks a point zero for German experimental rock music in the 20th century, out of which future shades of house and ambient music flourish. As if crafting the definitive Krautrock LP with their debut wasn’t enough, the seminal group invented the remix album. Even without exploring the deconstructed mixes of their single ‘Neuschnee/Super’, which takes many forms across side 2, Neu! 2 features further adventures in what makes Neu! special; motorik beats ad infinitum, ambient extrapolations and a bloody-minded aptitude for psychedelic hypnotism. Following the death of drummer, Klaus Dinger, the surviving member of the band, Michael Rother, lifted his sanction to never release the fourth album '86'. With the blessing of Dinger's long-term partner, and manager of his estate, Rother returned to the masters (then known as the elusive 'Neu! 4' album) to deliver this part-remixed/part-remastered body of work. A perfect coda to the duo's highly influential career.
